Money making in the parlour

Do you mean I need to open an ice cream parlour? Do you mean that I have to find out what happens in a milking parlour? Don’t be silly there used to be parlours in homes.  Yes I know that but today we only see them in museum or places set up for us to see what live used to be like such as a stately home or mansion.

The room that used to be called the parlour in late 19th century became known as the front room in the beginning in the early 20th century. By the end of the 20th century the front room had become known as the living room or lounge. The concept is the same. It is the room that you use to sit and talk with visitors. It is the room that you keep tidy in case anyone calls and where you keep the things that you want to show off to visitors. These days this is as likely to be a music system or a TV as much as ornaments or pictures.  So you do have a room in your house that is very like an old-fashioned parlour.

What is special about money making in the parlour?

Now you know what a parlour is what kind of money making ventures can be developed in one. They need to be ones that do not require large amounts of specialist equipment. You probably do not have the money and you definitely do not have the space for such equipment.  Whatever equipment or supplies you use need to be put away tidily when visitors are expected. It needs to be something that you can do without causing too much disruption to other people who want to use that room for other things, even if they want to do them while you are working. Yet at the same time you need to be able to make a profit as well as draw an income from such a venture. Sounds a tall order but some people do manage to achieve all these goals.

There are some things you can do for a hobby that you could try growing into a money making venture.  Many of the stalls you see at craft markets are like this. People spend long hours working to make things and then spend many hours standing at a stall hardly selling enough to cover the stall rent never mind cover he true cost of making the items they have sold. The temptation is to sell things for a low price so that people will buy them,  sometimes for less than the cost of the materials used to make them.  That is not a money-making venture but a form of  self-inflicted torture. I know I have tried it.
